He was born in Belgium on November 21, 1898 and studied at the Brussels Académie des Beaux-Arts u René Magritt from 1916 to 1918. Early on he developed a relationship with Cubism and Futurism in his work. The painting “The Song of Love (1914) by the Italian painter Giorgio de Chirco can be described as a “key image” for many of René Magritte’s works and continued to influence his artistic work. In his entire work he deals with the essence of reality. He often arranged his works through an unexpected juxtaposition of known objects. His enigmatic paintings have been associated with dream interpretations and psychoanalysis. From 1927 to 1930 Magritte lived in Paris, where he joined the Surrealist circle of artists around Andre Breton. He developed friendships with Breton, Miro, Hans Arp and Salvador Dali. His first exhibition took place in New York in 1947. The artist described the German occupation as a turning point in his creative work. “Before the war my paintings expressed fear, the experience of the war taught me that in art it is necessary to express enchantment… my works are a counterattack,” explained the artist René Magritte died in Brussels on August 15, 1967.
