Art award Kaiserring scholarship holder of the Mönchehaus Goslar

Since the beginning of the 1980s, the city of Goslar has been awarding the renowned Kaiserring art prize of the Mönchehaus Museum to internationally important contemporary artists. All of the prize-winning painters still dominate the art scene today, from Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter and Christo to Wolfgang Tillmans and Barbara Kruger. In 1998 Chen Yun Wang was awarded the Kaiserring Scholarship of the Mönchehaus Museum Goslar and a subsequent exhibition of his works.

A look into the past: The woman in front of the column

Chen Yun Wang wrote the work “Woman before Column” in 1991 shortly before his departure for Germany. It comes from the collection of the entrepreneur and art collector Th. K. Peter Schenning (1923 – 2010). Schenning was on the board of the Verein zur Förderung moderner Kunst in Goslar, which still runs the Mönchehaus Museum today. In 1998 the painting was shown publicly for the first time in Europe in the solo exhibition of Chen Yun Wang as part of the Kaiserring Scholarship Art Prize.

In his work presentation in Goslar, Chen Yun Wang wanted to present two sides of his work: Past and present, the dark and the light – Ying and Yang as the two primal forces of the Asian idea of the course of the world in his own painterly interpretation. The painting “Woman in front of a column” showed Chen Yun Wang in the room “Ying”, titled Black Room of the Past. The works shown in this room were mainly paintings from his creative period in China as well as a series of paintings that had been created in Germany as reminders of China.
