In the opening sequence, the protagonists of the film are introduced as adults.
The screenshots show the successful architect Ben Hanscom, played by John Ritter.
He is here just coming back with a woman from an award ceremony where he received an important architecture prize.
The entire interior, especially the illuminated objects by Jacques Vojnovic, are meant to indicate the extravagant living of the architect.
This is emphasized by the fact that the woman stands in front of the objects in amazement.
